These gross things are eating the eggplant...

Before I get the first taste of my garden, there are lots of things getting theirs. Unfortunately, this is one of them.

It's a Colorado Potato Beetle, and teh internetz says they're very resistant to insecticides, and they're too gross to touch, so I'm going to have to get some long tweezers or something... blechh...

Swing setters, like jet setters, but slower and at home...

Finally got that dirt pile flattened out and the area cleaned and rocks dumped on top.

Very happy with how it all looks, though I'm not completely done, of course... at least it's presentable.

I moved the Jalapenos and Banana Peppers from box#1 to box #2 because the Broccoli and Zucchini were fighting to blot them out. I should have looked at my book before planting that Zucchini, and saw they really needed a lot of space, but that's also why I'm keeping this blog, to reinforce the things I learn.
Either way, the two transplants seem to look especially droopy in the mornings. Even though I brought a sizable dirtball with them, I'm sure a lot of the roots were damages. I'm just watering every morning and they perk right up. There are a ton of peppers growing, so everything seems to be okay.

Our cucumber plant is flowering! Can't wait to get it running up the trellis.

Banana Pepper turned red...

Our Ivory Bell Peppers are looking to quickly turn abundant.

Put my tomato cage from last year around the Eggplant for stability. Another flower has started to fruit, and this first one is getting mighty big and was threatening to touch the ground. The fear now is that it'll have a wire dent in the side...

Both tomato plants are coming along, but the Supersonic type has the most so far. I've been studiously threading the arms into the trellis, but realized I hadn't kept up with cutting out unneeded suckers.

The battery on my camera was dead this morning when the zucchini flowers are in bloom.

Just a show of a Jalapeno flower.

Another day, another update...

So excited about the second box, and how things are coming along, I took more photos.
Either that, or I'm fiendishly procrastinating doing real work...

New box filled and planted!

Finally bought the dirt for the second box! This time I squared it off into proper square feet, so there are 16 spaces instead of the 9 on the first box. You can also see in the back where I've bought some logs to portion off a raised area where a swing char will go.

I've actually moved two of the plants since I took this photo an hour ago. Right in front are cantaloupes, and the first on the farthest left are cucumbers, both climbing plants. I've moved the melons next to the cucumbers and will build a second trellis soon to support them both growing up.
On the aisle next to those, center left, are cauliflower (moved the one from the back left corner), and then center right are more jalapeno and banana pepper plants. On the far right is a full row of bell peppers... purple, yellow, ivory and green from front to back.

Zucchini blowout, eggplant rising, baby tomato..

The newest addition to the garden it quickly taking over! The zucchini has pushed its leaves in between the (also gigantic) broccoli and well over the edge of the planter.

Our eggplant is doing well, and the second flower is in full bloom. I'll have to tie the plant back because it's leaning away from the trellis and toward the (rather pathetic) yellow peppers.

I didn't even notice, but my mum pointed out the inset eggs on the underside of the leaf to the left of the eggplant! Looking closer, it seems they were on three leaves (just below and to the right)! I had to put my camera down below where I can normally see to get these photos, so I would have never spotted them otherwise.

And out first tiny tomato has appeared...

Rocks and Box

We've installed a second 4' box and brought a truckload of white rocks in to cover the ground around the boxes. We've got weedblocker beneath most of the rocks.

The Peppers are doing the best, with two banana peppers and one jalapeƱo peppers. The green pepper got a rot spot on it, and I'm not sure why.

My eggplant has a bloom!

And another rose photo...
